"RAZOR BUMPS" scientfically known as Pseudofolliculitis Barba PFB is most common on the male face, but it can also happen on other parts of the body where hair is shaved or plucked, especially areas where hair is curly and the skin is sensitive, such as genital shaving (more properly termed pseudofolliculitis pubis or PFP).
After a hair has been shaved, it begins to grow back. Curly hair tends to curl into the skin instead of straight out the follicle, leading to an inflammation reaction.
PFB can make the skin look itchy and red, and in some cases, it can even look like pimples.
These inflamed papules or pustules can form especially if the area becomes infected.
This is especially problematic for men of African descent and other people with curly hair.
If left untreated over time, this can cause keloid scarring in the beard area.
Pseudofolliculitis Barbae can further be divided into two types of ingrown hairs: transfollicular and extrafollicular. The extrafollicular hair is a hair that has exited the follicle and reentered the skin.
The transfollicular hair never exits the follicle, but because of its naturally curly nature curls back into the follicle causing fluid build-up and irritation. Men of African, Mediterranean, Jewish descent, and other peoples who have naturally coarse or tightly curling hair will often get 'razor bumps' in their beards.

Lemongrass Oil - When used in a lotion or a cream, it has value in clearing cellulite, as well as toning the skin, opening blocked pores and helping with acne. The antiseptic properties are useful in treating athlete's foot and other fungal infections.
Peppermint Oil - On the skin, peppermint oil is used to relieve skin irritation and itchiness and also helps to reduce skin redness, where inflammation is present. It is used for dermatitis, acne, ringworm, scabies and pruritus and also relieves itching, sunburn and inflammation of the skin, while at the same time having a cooling action.
Tea Tree Oil - One of the most powerful immune stimulant oils and helps fight infections of all kinds and helps clear the skin. When tea tree oil is blended into a cream or lotion and applied to the skin, it will help to clear up any fungal, bacterial as well as viral infections - dandruff and other scalp disorders and is also effective to clear up skin rash.
Orange Extract - When used in a cream or lotion it also assists the lymphatic system, helping to detoxify a congested skin and although it is a good general skin tonic, it is great for older more mature skin, dealing with dermatitis, as well as acne and soothing a dry irritated skin. The general tonic action seems to stem from the action it has on supporting collagen formation in the skin, which is required for a healthy, young-looking skin.
Lavender - When it is used in a cream or lotion, it is most helpful with relieving burns. Its cicatrisant properties help the skin heal faster and the cytophylactic properties will help it do so with less scarring. The soothing and anti-inflammatory action of lavender oil will also have a balancing action on the skin and can be used for dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, boils, carbuncles and acne. |
